Why Luke in TLJ Shouldn't Have Been Surprising...

Hey everyone,Before I even start this, I absolutely loved The Last Jedi. It is one of my favourite Star Wars movie, if not my top favourite. I just wanted to lay that out before I begin my little thought I had. So I was rewatching The Force Awakens, and this conversation happened again as it always will:Han Solo: This map's not complete. It's just a piece. Ever since Luke disappeared, people have been looking for him.Rey: Why did he leave?Han Solo: He was training a new generation of Jedi. One boy, an apprentice, turned against him, destroyed it all. Luke felt responsible. He just walked away from everything.Finn: Do you know what happened to him?Han Solo: A lot of rumors. Stories. People that knew him best think he went looking for the first Jedi temple. So, Luke's character arc and current status is setup in The Force Awakens when we hear about him leaving. I had this idea of 'Luke felt responsible, he walked away from everything' in my mind when I first went to see this movie, hence I was not even in the slightest surprised at his attitude and outlook. I was in fact expecting it. And of course at the end of the movie, Luke is the legend and myth again. He finds his hope in Rey and forgives himself for his mistakes with Ben.I dont know. I guess I just don't get why so many people were so surprised and baffled, JJ kind of wrote him to be a broken, cynical old man since TFA. I thought he was done perfectly and made for a very interesting and unique character arc.MTFBWY! Going for my 4th viewing in a week :) via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2meSHWr
