Disclaimer: I'm not trying to stop anyone from disliking this movie but if people will cite specific logic as the problems then a logic based response or discussion should be valid shouldn't it?People keep saying Luke was out of character in TLJ particularly because he considered killing Ben even though he refused to kill Darth Vader.I'd argue that that example actually shows just how in character Luke actually is compared to the OT1st of all Luke did not kill Ben and wasn't planning to. Luke described it as a moment of pure instinct that passed like a fleeting shadow. Luke didn't go in the tent intending to kill him, he went in to see how far Ben has turned. Luke deploying his lightsaber was an instinctual reaction, one that he didn't push through with once he realized what he was doing. In short Luke was overwhelmed with fear but overcame it. His timing just sucked cause Ben woke up to see it.Now for ROTJ. I know what your responses will be "ROTJ is DIFFERENT. He was IN COMBAT when he almost killed Vader and he still didn't kill him despite that". The people who agree with this statement need to watch the entire scene again. It wasn't even close to "I have to fight for life and the anger kicked in" type of situation. Luke was pretty defensive during that duel, he kept trying to keep distance and even straight up hides. Until 1 very specific moment.Darth Vader says "If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps she will". It is only at this exact moment where Luke starts hacking at Vader with seemingly killing intent. It wasn't the fight that triggered him, it was the threat to turn Leia to the darkside. Luke was then overwhelmed with emotion til he realized what he was doing and overcame it.In both ROTJ and TLJ Luke was triggered by the thought of someone he cared about turning to the dark side. His reactions were devoid of logic. Hence being called PURE INSTINCT. Both times Luke was able to stop himself and overcame his instincts. Some might argue that Luke shouldn't ever make the same mistakes again but there's 2 problems with that argumentHe never made the mistake to begin withEmotions aren't vaccines, you don't automatically become immune to an emotion because you've overcome it before. He's always been vulnerable to emotional outbursts for illogical reasons(Anyone who knows Leia knows she's even less likely to turn than he is), Luke's ability to overcome those outbursts is consistent.Just my two cents via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2CF5fkc
