We will review messages in the order we receive them and get back to you as we are able.GuidelinesRead and follow ReddiquetteEverything found on this page will be treated as rules on this subreddit. Please familiarize yourself with them. Most importantly, doxxing will result in an immediate ban.Vote based on quality, not opinionDon't downvote because you disagree, downvote because a post or comment isn't relevant or doesn't contribute.Report rule-breaking content, and feel free to modmailWe're quite friendly, really. This is a community, and we rely on you to be part of it. We highly value everyone who reports things so that we can see them earlier, and if you send a modmail with any questions, suggestions, or concerns, we'll get back to you soon.No copyright infringement or piracyChances are, if it's illegal, we don't want it here. Don't be afraid to mention your opinions of things like the despecialized editions or fan edits, but if you discuss torrent sites or especially share or ask for any links, expect the bansaber. If content has not been release via one of the Official Star Wars channels, it is considered pirated content and posting will result in a permanent ban.The moderators reserve the right to moderate at their own discretionWe hope we don't need to do this, but sometimes things get really out of hand. We do our best to keep this a safe space in which we can all have fun, and to do that, we sometimes need to make judgment calls. If you want to know why a post was removed (assuming a reason was not given), please message the mods. To expidite the process, please do not delete the post or comment and send us a link, as well.Posts1) Reposting ContentReposts include different articles about the same story, as well as unique images of the same merchandise (t-shirts, action figures, etc.). A news video about a recent event and that provides no new information will be considered a repost and removed. Gifs and screengrabs of recently released videos will also be considered reposts. Slightly altered recently posted images will also be deleted at mod discretion. There is no grace period: a repost is a repost, no matter how old.1A) Karma TrainsKarma trains are occurrences where one user gains a large number of upvotes (or karma) by posting specific content, then other users attempt to leach the residual karma by posting their own version of the content. Be original. Karma trains are not allowed here and will be removed on sight.2) Blog Spam and Self-PromotionAny links to blogs or news sites that add little to no original content to a story, video, or any other news will be considered spam. This will especially be enforced if the page features prominent/intrusive ads. Please disable AdBlock before submitting links to ensure that they're not full of ads. Many users don't have AdBlock installed. Additionally, do not post stuff you made yourself with the intent of promoting your yotube/twitch/etsy/etc page. Fan art and content is encouraged, but if you post only content from your youtube page, or you only share things from a specific DeviantArt page, it will be considered self-promotion and removed.3) NSFW ContentIf you'll have to tag it, do not post it. This includes pornographic and intentionally erotic images or videos, links to websites with pornographic advertisements, links to articles or videos containing excessive swearing, or links to websites that host erotic content. We are family-friendly here. Please also try to refrain from using profanity in comments and posts. Post titles that contain profanity will be removed. If you have something you desperately want to post, please visit /r/StarWarsNSFW.4) Buying, Selling, and TradingIf a link has an "ADD TO CART" button, it's getting removed. These links should only be provided in the comments upon request. In addition, please refrain from making posts seeking to buy, sell, or barter Star Wars goods. Craigslist exists for a reason.5) Memes and MacrosA meme is an image, video, piece of text, etc. that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users. Image macros are pictures superimposed with text for humorous effect. Mods have final say in this regard. There are a few options for you to post memes and macros. Try /r/PrequelMemes or /r/SequelMemes.6) Politics and ReligionReal-world politics and religion will be removed. You may reference and discuss Star Wars politics and religion, but keep all real-world references and discussion out of it. All offending posts will be removed.7) Spoilers in TitlesAny links that contain spoilers must have a [SPOILERS] tag in the title. For more about what a spoiler is, see the Spoiler Policy.8) Keep content relevant to Star WarsHarrison Ford grabbing a lemonade in Detroit isn't about Star Wars. John Williams scoring the new Indiana Jones movie isn't about Star Wars. Exceptions may be made for deaths or birthdays at mod discretion.9) Post FlairEvery time you post, regardless of what you post, you will receive an automated message asking you to flair your posts. This is sent out to everyone. If you are on a mobile device, you can make a comment with your flair choice in brackets (like this: [Movies]), and AutoMod will flair your post for you.10) Post QualityMake sure you put some level of effort into your post. If you have a question, elaborate in the text section. If you want to share a cool image, explain why you want to share it in the comments. Complete list of all Order 66 survivors in Legends and Canon including how long they survived, how they survived, and what happened to them.

EDIT: This didn't come out great in Reddit so here is the link to my Word Doc to read it there where the Bold makes it easier to see http://ift.tt/2DIxHie a long time I have been hearing fans say that to many Jedi survived Order 66. Now for some of those fans I think anyone besides Yoda and Obi-wan surviving is to many, or that at least every Jedi has to be dead by ANH (which is where a lot of the Kanan and Ezra must die people come in) so as to not ruins Luke’s story or make Yoda and Obi-wan out to be liars. Personally I’ve never had a problem with how many Jedi survived Order 66 but I did start to wonder just how many were there? How many survived? How? For How long? It's easy enough to say X survived but without knowing what happened to them we don’t really get the whole story. Especially when it seemed like most of them were created just for Vader to kill or for the RPG games and never showed up again. In fact that’s something that is happening in the NEU right now. The last two arcs in the Vader comic have been about him fighting Jedi who survived and the next arc is taking him to Mon Calamari to kill another jedi. Now in a way this list is not complete, but its not complete because the writers both in Legend and the NEU don’t want it complete. Having an exact number of Jedi that survived means you can only have that exact number of stories to tell. So we will never know how many Jedi were on the list Vader was given in his comic. Or how many Jedi children were with K’Kruhk or the Almas Academy or Plett’s Well. But in a way it doesn’t matter. I’m only going to count those who were named and mentioned because those are the ones that affected the story in some way. The rest aren’t important enough to get named and are just there for background. We don’t know if it was one or fifty. We don’t know if they lived, were killed by imperials, gave up being a jedi, or became inquisitors. Heck we don’t even know how many of K’Kruhk’s younglings made it or what year he and T’ra Saa joined Luke’s Academy other than its after Fate of the Jedi but before Legacy. So it's useless counting them.I also didn’t count a few Jedi who disappeared long before the Clone Wars or even the Prequel Trilogy. Celeste Morne’s story has nothing to do with the Purge or Jedi Survivors. Heck she isn’t even awake for most of a day. Same for Ikrit who went into hibernation 300 years before the Clone Wars. Ood Bnar gave his life 4000 years before the movies but because his ghost pops up in Dark Empire he is counted. Nor did I count the children of Jedi who were born after the Purge or self trained force users or users trained by former Jedi (So Kanan is on the list but not Ezra)Before I get into the numbers and percents I’m going to say that while I don’t expect the NEU to have as many Jedi survivors as Legends going forward because of not having as many RPG campaign books (do they even have any?) I still expect we will see a lot. People like the Dark Times comic because its interesting seeing Jedi have to hide and try to survive. People like Purge and the Vader comics because well it's Vader fighting Jedi. Luke getting to meet surviving Jedi is an interesting idea.So numbers the part everyone is here for. I will do Legends first then NEU/Canon. Now I’m going to be breaking these numbers up a bit so we can see. First we are going to look at simply how many Jedi survived per era and see how that number is whittled down. This is the simplest break down of the numbers though it doesn’t give us a good view of what is happening to the people. This is also the only list where I will keep counting those who gave up being a Jedi or became Inquisitors as part of Jedi. In the other lists they will be their own groups.Purge Survivors:In 19BBY at the start of the Purge their are 190 Jedi alive. That is 1.9% of the Jedi Order. You could sell the Purge as Anti-Jedi hand soap with that level of germ killing. So while It sounds like a lot of people it's only a small fraction of the order. Of the 190 survivors 49 ( 25.79%) are Masters, 67 (35.26%) are Knights, 44 ( 23.16%) are Padawans, 20 (10.53 %) are Younglings, and 10 (5.26%) are Jedi Service Corps members.By 17 BBY that number has been cut down to 30 Masters, 46 Knights, 39 Padawans, 20 Younglings, and 10 Jedi Service Corps Members. 45 Survivors are killed in the first two years. This ends the first stage of the purge. From 17BBY to 1 ABY Vader and the Inquisitors would hunt the jedi down off and on but they were no longer seen as a threat by Palpatine.Between 17 BBY and 0 ABY the number of Purge survivors fell to 21 Masters, 33 Knights, 37 Padawans, 18 Younglings, and 10 Jedi Service Corps Members still alive for a total of 119 Purge survivors around at the start of EP 4. But remember this is just survivors and that number includes those who gave up being a jedi, became inquisitors, were not even in the galaxy (cough Verge cough) or disappeared into the depths of space never to be seen again. From 0ABY to 4ABY we have 21 Masters, 28 Knights, 29 Padawans, 17 Younglings, and 9 Jedi Service Corps members. Or 104 Survivors at the end of the movies. But you have to remember that unlike in the NEU the Empire didn’t fold a year after Endor and fighting would go on for a while. Not to mention that Luke won’t even start training Jedi until 11ABY and the Empire won’t be completely gone until 19ABY after years of fighting and 8 years of cold war. So let's see what we have by the treaty in 19 ABY. We have 18 Masters, 21 Knights, 26 Padawans, 17 Younglings, and 6 Jedi Service Corps members.TLDR for Purge Survivors section[Purge + 0] 190 survivors 49 ( 25.79%) are Masters, 67 (35.26%) are Knights, 44 ( 23.16%) are Padawans, 20 (10.53 %) are Younglings, and 10 (5.26%) are Jedi Service Corps members.19-18BBY 30 Masters, 46 Knights, 39 Padawans, 20 Younglings, and 10 Jedi Service Corps Members.17-0 BBY 21 Masters, 33 Knights, 37 Padawans, 18 Younglings, and 10 Jedi Service Corps Members0-4 ABY 21 Masters, 28 Knights, 29 Padawans, 17 Younglings, and 9 Jedi Service Corps members.5-19 ABY 18 Masters, 21 Knights, 26 Padawans, 17 Younglings, and 6 Jedi Service Corps members. So as we can see it seems like a big number just going by survivors. But it's a false number that doesn’t give the whole story. What we are looking up next though raises a question. What is a Jedi? Is Ahsoka still a jedi if she left the order but still follows the ideas and teachings of the Order? Was Kanan a Jedi when he was drinking himself to death? What about the years when he was fighting with the Alliance but not using his saber or the force? And heck one person on the list failed out of the Academy and left to open a martial arts school before the Clone Wars but is still technically a survivor. This next section is looking at what happened to them over the years. Who turned into an Inquisitor, who gave up being a Jedi, and who decided to fight against the Empire.Survivor's Lives:So we said that at the End of the purge their were 190 survivors, 49 ( 25.79%) are Masters, 67 (35.26%) are Knights, 44 ( 23.16%) are Padawans, 20 (10.53 %) are Younglings, and 10 (5.26%) are Jedi Service Corps members. Lets see what happens to the ones that were still left alive.[Masters] Between 19 BBY and 19 ABY: 3 Masters survived due to not being a part of the Order, 3 became Inquisitors, 26 were killed by Darth Vader or the Empire, 11 lived in hiding or were in a form of stasis, 4 Survived by hiding with K’Kruhk or the Altisian Jedi, 2 fought with the Rebel AllianceSo by 0 ABY only 2 Masters are still claiming to be Jedi and Helping the Rebellion (Rahm Kota, Qu Rahn) . And of the 49 Survivors only 4 will join Luke's Academy after the war (T’ra Saa, K’Kruhk, Aqinos, and Winslau Da’k’s Jedi Master)[Knights] Between 19 BBY and 19 ABY: 12 Knights left the Order or were in stasis before the war, 7 Knights became Inquisitors or Dark Jedi working for Palpatine, 29 Were killed by Vader, the Empire, or commited suicide, 12 Give up being a Jedi and go into hiding, 5 Help the Rebellion but not as Jedi. 2 Help the Rebellion as a JediSo by 0ABY 2 Jedi are still claiming to be Knights and helping the Rebellion (Unidentified Jedi (Ironarms), Corwin Shelvay). And of the 67 Survivors 5 will join Luke’s Academy (Dragitel, Vima-Da-Boda, Ilum, Luxum, Corwin Shelvay)[Padawans] Between 19 BBY and 19 ABY: 3 Padawans left the Order or were in stasis before the war, 5 Padawans became Inquisitors or Dark Jedi working for Palpatine, 18 Padawans were killed by Vader, the Empire, or Bounty Hunters, 16 Give up being a Jedi and live as civilians since they were not actively hunted, 2 Help the Rebellion,So by 0 ABY their are no jedi still claiming to be Padawans. And of the 45 survivors 0-1 Joins Luke’s Order (Chase Piru is part of K’khruk’s Jedi who may or may not have joined after 40ABY. We really don’t know.)[Younglings] Between 19 BBY and 19 ABY: 3 Younglings left or were kicked out of the Order before the war, 2 Younglings became Inquisitors or worked for Palpatine, 4 Younglings were killed by Vader or the Empire, 2 Younglings gave up being Jedi and lived as civilians, And 9 Younglings went into hiding at Master K’Kruhk’s Hidden Temple on Arkinnea. So by 0 ABY Their are 0 Jedi still claiming to be younglings. The Younglings with K’Kruhk are never mentioned again outside of the Dark Times comic. And Nichos grew up as a civilian and only has faint memories of Plett’s Well. And of the 20 survivors 1 Joins Luke’s Order ( Nichos Marr)[Jedi Service Corps] Between 19 BBY and 19 ABY: 3 Jedi Service Corps members left or were kicked out of the Order before the War, 4 JSC members became Inquisitors or worked for Palpatine, 1 JSC member was killed by Vader and the Empire, 2 JSC members left the order to live as civilians,So by 0 ABY their is 1 Jedi Service Corps member still claiming to be a Jedi (Warl Thimbus). And of the 10 Jedi Service Corps survivors 0 join Luke Skywalker’s AcademyTLDR For Survivor’s Lives Section:2 Masters, 2 Jedi Knights, 0 Padawan, 0 Younglings 1 Jedi Service Corp Member still claiming to be jedi. OR out of the 190 survivors only 5 (2.63%) are left. Or to go even larger, of the 10000 jedi only 0.05% are left active.4 Masters, 5 Knights, 0 Padawans, 1 Youngling, 0 Jedi Service Corps Members will join Luke’s Academy. Or out of the 190 survivors only 10 (5.26%) are left. Or to go even larger, of the 10000 jedi only 0.1% are left active.0.05-0.1% of all Jedi in the Galaxy will be left alive and active by the time the Empire is defeated. 0.1 is an anomaly, a rounding error, a speck of inconsequential dust compared to the might of the Empire. This is a Empire of a 1000 systems and a million planets. What is 0.5% of an order compared to that?Fun Theory and how many Jedi did Vader Kill Section:I sort of brushed up against this in my opening statement but its always been a theory of mine that most of the Jedi who survived were just invented for RPG games for players to meet and interact with (since people love Jedi contrary to what some think) or were just invented for Vader to kill. And that most of those created never appeared anywhere outside their main work discounting being mentioned in passing or referenced in a lore book. As in they were never an active character in another work outside their own.So my main thesis isMost Jedi survivors come from either the SW RPG, TCG, or Galaxies MMO or were created for Vader to kill (Purge, Dark Times, Rise of Darth Vader). And that most Jedi survivors never appear at at later date past when they are last seen. Meaning if they are active in 18 BBY but don’t show up at Luke's academy they are as good as dead or retired. So let's see how we do.RPG/MMO/TCG: Created 83 Jedi or 43.68 % of all Jedi Survivors. 5 Jedi or 6.02% of the Jedi it created was mentioned in works outside its series.General Books and Movies: 34 Jedi or 17.89% of all Jedi Survivors. 21 Jedi or 61.76% of the Jedi it created was mentioned in works outside its series.Vader/Purge/Dark Times: Created 32 Jedi or 16.84 % of all Jedi Survivors. 1 Jedi or 6.25% of the Jedi it created was mentioned in works outside its series.General Comics: Created 22 Jedi or 11.58% of all Jedi Survivors. 12 Jedi or 54.55% of the Jedi it created was mentioned in works outside its series.General Games: Created 9 Jedi or 4.74% of all Jedi Survivors. 1 Jedi or 11.11% of the Jedi it created was mentioned in works outside its series.Dark Empire Comic: Created 6 Jedi or 3.16 % of all Jedi Survivors. 4 Jedi or 66.67% of the Jedi it created was mentioned in works outside its series.Lore Books: Created 4 Jedi or 2.11 % of all Jedi Survivors. 0 Jedi or 0% of the Jedi it created was mentioned in works outside its series.YTLDR for Theory idea:43.68 % of all survivors come from RPG’s, 17.89 % from books, 16.84% were created for Vader to kill, and everything else combined is 21.59% In order of the listed series 5/21/1/12/1/4/0 Jedi Appeared in other works. Perhaps I should have broken the Books and Movies into separate grouping. And Vader’s Kill count is? Of the 116 dead Jedi Vader killed 32 or 27 % of them. Most of them being killed between 19-17BBY.Canon Section:So this section is much shorter than the other for the obvious reason that Legends can run for the Senate if it wanted to (Min age 30-35) while the NEU/Canon is just entering Pre-school (4 yrs). Now I expect over the years for this section to grow dramatically. Possibly not as large or as fast as Legends due to the lack of RPG guides but it will still end up containing at least a hundred names. In fact a new name will have to be added in a few weeks when the next Vader arc comes out. Also some of these names will change (Please don’t let Kanan’s change!!) as stories progress and new stories are written. You also might notice I’m counting Ahsoka here and not in Legends. This is due to TCW being the last thing produced in Legends so we don’t really get her story. Besides I’m more than happy to consider it solely a NEU thing even if it does mean giving up Ahsoka. I am also no counting Ben, Yoda, or Vader himself since they have to be around because of appearing in the OT. Which is I guess a lot of peoples problems with Jedi survivors. They didn’t appear or were not mentioned in the OT therefore they all have to be dead or they ruin the movie.Purge Survivors:In 19BBY at the start of the Purge their are 18 named Jedi confirmed alive. That is 0.18% of the Jedi Order. Of the 18 survivors 4 ( 22.22%) are Masters, 13 (72.22%) are Knights, 1( 5.56%) are PadawansBy 17 BBY that number has been cut down to 2 Masters, 12 Knights, 1 Padawans. 3 Survivors are killed in the first two years. This ends the first stage of the purge. From 17BBY to 1 ABY Vader and the Inquisitors would hunt the jedi down off and on but they were no longer seen as a threat by Palpatine.Between 17 BBY and 0 ABY the number of Purge survivors fell to 1 Masters, 4 Knights, 1 Padawans still alive for a total of 6 Purge survivors around at the start of EP 4. But remember this is just survivors and that number includes those who gave up being a jedi, became inquisitors or disappeared into the depths of space never to be seen again.Purge Survivors TLDR;[Purge + 0] 18 survivors 4 ( 22.22%) are Masters, 13 (72.22%) are Knights, 1 ( 5.56%) are Padawans,19-18BBY 2 Masters, 12 Knights, 1 Padawans17-0 BBY 1 Masters, 4 Knights, 1 PadawansSurvivor's Lives:So we said that at the End of the purge their were 18 survivors 4 ( 22.22%) are Masters, 13 (72.22%) are Knights, 1 ( 5.56%) are Padawans, Lets see what happens to the ones that were still left alive. Also we have no knowledge about them meeting Luke so I will leave that part out.[Masters] Between 19 BBY and 19 ABY: 3 were killed by Darth Vader or the Empire, 1 lived in hiding (Quinlin Vos)[Knights] Between 19 BBY and 19 ABY: 1 Knights left the Order or were in stasis before the war, 6 Knights became Inquisitors or Dark Jedi working for Palpatine, 4 Were killed by Vader, the Empire, or the Inquisitors, 2 Give up being a Jedi and go into hiding (Ahsoka Tano, Kayce Beradun, Uvell)[Padawans] Between 19 BBY and 19 ABY: 1 Padawan gives up being a Jedi untill he meets a rebel operative and starts to help the Rebellion (Kannan)TLDR of the Survivor’s Lives section:1 Masters, 3 Jedi Knights, 1 Padawan still claiming to be jedi. OR out of the 18 survivors only 5 (27.78%) are left. Or to go even larger, of the 10000 jedi only 0.05% are left active. Hey look, we ended up with the same numbers as in the Legends groupStar Wars Rebels: Created 5 Jedi or 27.78 % of all Jedi Survivors.Books and Movies: Created 5 Jedi or 27.78 % of all Jedi Survivors.Star Wars Uprising: Created 4 Jedi or 22.22 % of all Jedi Survivors.Dark Lord of the Sith: Created 3 Jedi or 16.67 % of all Jedi Survivors. The Clone Wars: Created 1 Jedi or 5.56 % of all Jedi Survivors. And that is the end of my List. Here is a link to my excel sheet if you want to read some more about each of the jedi or just look at my pretty colour coding. http://ift.tt/2EjdPDu I also have a Word Doc I might make to fill in some more information but It doesn’t have anything but [Name: [Rank] [Background] [How did they survive] [ Current Status] [Date Last Seen] [Created For] [Appeared in other works] ] Copied 190 times. So I will leave it up to you to discuss the numbers and what they mean. Personally it reinforces my belief that the number of survivors isn’t a problem. In legends and canon its the same 0.5-1% of the entire order making it to the OT. You can’t find a germ cleaner that does better than that. And as for Legends only a few members joined Luke’s academy and it was all well after it was established and up and running. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2Fq7FAL

How RJ handled Rey & JJ’s mystery box about her parents in TLJ

A personal note before I get to my point This is going to be long, so before I get to my main topic I want to say that we all share a love for a galaxy far, far away that we are deeply invested into. No reason to get disrespectful with each other over difference of opinion on one of its installments. TLJ has its problems, but I feel like some of them aren’t as big of a deal as the ‘RJ’s TLJ needs removed from canon’ camp make them out to be. Every Star Wars movie has its problems, some more than others. The Prequels should have already taught us the lesson Star Wars is not always what you expect it to be, and over time even the ones you dislike the most are still lovable and have great moments. In time TLJ will be the same way, and some who hate it now will come to love the good it does bring while still being angry that Padme died of a broken heart and Vader was introduced like Frankenstein with an iconic NOOOOOOOO!!! (tongue in cheek). Sometimes we imagine the story to unfold differently, and sometimes it’s in moments that are really frustrating. As much as I think it’s awkward, I think I might like Super Leia more than I do Frankenstein Vader or a key character’s death due to a broken heart.I also feel the need to point out the fact that exploring tiny details/nuances of a Star Wars movie is exactly what we did after TFA… take tiny snippets and give them great importance, analyze the sith out of it, and then come up with a dozen theories. So the argument that someone is ‘stretching’ or ‘digging’ to make a point, that’s exactly what we do as Star Wars fans. How RJ handled Rey & JJ’s Mystery Box about her parents in TLJSome say that RJ completely abandoned/destroyed JJ’s mystery boxes from TFA. The biggest of JJ’s mystery boxes was probably Rey’s parents. It might be Snoke, but I’m not going into that one here.Personally, I loved all the theories about her being a Skywalker or Kenobi or even a Palpatine, but I said that I would be ok with her being a nobody. Why not. Because a lineage would explain why she’s so powerful? It didn’t for Anakin. Yeah, yeah, yeah… virgin birth and midi-chlorians blah, blah, blah. Anakin was a nobody, from nowhere, who doesn’t know who his dad is and who’s mom is a nobody. Let’s not get into the fact that Yoda, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Qui-Gon Jinn were all nobody’s. I understand, Rey is ‘so powerful,’ so a family tree will explain that. But will it?I am going to explain why I don’t believe that to be necessarily true. Personally, I think RJ took JJ’s mystery boxes and used them to give depth to Rey’s character while using misdirection to make us think the answer to her parentage has been answered but leaving the mystery box intact for JJ to do with as he pleases in IX.Here’s an interesting article that goes into the challenges JJ’s mystery boxes presented and RJ’s use of “narrative substitution.” Here’s a snippet from the article:”Narrative substitution is where you appear to tell one kind of story, but later reject it and reveal that this was actually a different kind of story all along… It changes your perception of the emotional need of the story’s outcome. Where a collapse causes the pillars of a story to fall apart, narrative substitution asserts a new structure that builds in a new and unexpected direction – but still on what was fundamentally established by the mystery box.”So that being said, let’s look at a few things RJ said about Rey:"Well, the idea that this natural place reflected […] The idea that if there’s a Jedi Temple up top, the light, it has to be balanced by a place of great darkness. We’re drawing a very obvious connection to Luke’s training and to Dagobah here, obviously. And so the idea was if the up top is the light, down underneath is the darkness. And she descends down into there and has to see, just like Luke did in the cave, her greatest fear. And her greatest fear is [that], in the search for identity, she has nobody but herself to rely on."“For me, it was a dramatic choice. It was just that her hearing – and also for the audience hearing that… if the answer had been, that’s presented in this movie at least, in this context. If the answer presented to her was, ‘Your parents are so-and-so, here you go, here’s your place in this story.’ That would be the easiest thing for her to hear. And easiest thing for us to hear! Wish fulfillment. It’s like, ‘Oh, great! That’s who I am. That’s that.’ The hardest thing she could hear is, ‘No, you’re not going to get that answer, that definition.’ In fact, the fact that you don’t have that is going to be used against you by Kylo, to try and make you lean on him. You’re going to have to find the strength to define yourself and stand on your own two feet.““I was thinking, what’s the most powerful answer to that question? Powerful meaning: what’s the hardest thing that Rey could hear? That’s what you’re after with challenging your characters. I think back to the ‘I am your father’ moment with Vader and Luke, and the reason I think that lands is not because it’s a surprise or a twist but because it’s the hardest thing Luke and thus the audience could hear at that moment. It turns someone into a bad guy that you just hate and want to kill into suddenly, Oh my God, this is a part of our protagonist. We have to start thinking of this person in more complex terms. We need to start thinking in terms of a redemption arc.”RJ’s explanation of Rey’s Ahch-To dark pit scene is a parallel to Luke’s Dagobah dark cave scene in ESB. There’s a few things we can take from that. First of all, Luke saw himself in the Vader mask in Dagobah, it was his greatest fear. As well all know fear is one of the steps that lead to the Dark Side. It didn’t come true though, he overcame his fear.In Rey’s dark pit scene she is faced with her greatest fear. As RJ said, it’s the hardest thing she could hear. Since she was a child she’s been waiting for the return of her parents, and has been hoping that as she’s been thrusted on this epic journey that an explanation would be given to her. Not getting the answer she wanted to hear was her greatest fear. She has to overcome the fact that she feels alone, that she has no family, that she doesn’t have an easy answer to where she fits in this storyIt would be easy to follow the OT blow by blow and give us the same answers. But RJ keeps with the Star Wars cinematic tradition George Lucas put in place of having parallels and inverted parallels throughout the saga, in his own words like a “symphony.” But if the Dagobah and Ahch-To scenes are a parallel, why would we believe that what she saw is the truth? We know Luke didn’t become Vader, this also might not be Rey’s truth. Sure, it could be an inverted parallel. But it still could go either way.In the dark cave mirror sequence, she starts to see two shadows coming close to her, then they merge as one and then she touches the mirror and sees that it’s her. The Dark Side of the Force was toying with her emotions and her greatest feat. Teasing her with the possibility that she might get an answer only to reveal that she is alone. When Luke went to Obi-Wan, when asked why he wants to be a Jedi, he said because his father was. Rey is a nobody from nowhere trying to find her place in this story, why would the Dark Side answer that question for her? There are two other ways that scene could have gone. One is something RJ almost did, a direct parallel to ESB with her in Kylo’s mask, the fear of turning. The other would be her parents if she was Rey Palpatine or someone else on the Dark Side that would challenge her allegiance. If she is a descendant of a Kenobi, that wouldn’t be the place to do it.I understand it’s not just the mirror scene. There’s Kylo’s confirmation that she’s a nobody too:Kylo Ren: Do you know the truth about your parents? Or have you always known? You've just hidden it away. Say it.Rey: [in tears] They were nobody.Kylo Ren: They were filthy junk traders. Sold you off for drinking money. They're dead in a pauper's grave in the Jakku desert. You come from nothing. You're nothing. But not to me.We know that Snoke bridged the minds of Kylo and Rey. In regards to the connection after Snoke’s dead, sure we can go with the possibility that he’s not dead… but I go with the idea that we don’t know a lot about how it works but it could be that it was a one-time thing, not something that required Snoke to keep it continuously active. So Kylo – Rey Force face time. We know they weren’t just talking but they were looking into each other’s minds. They both reference what they saw a couple of different times. Now, taking the meaning of the mirror scene and apply it to the conversation between Kylo and Rey, he saw into her mind and saw what she experienced in the dark cave and he used her fear to manipulate her. Why wouldn’t he? He thinks he can take her feelings of being alone so that he can turn her and have her by his side.So she may actually be a nobody, but RJ did not destroy JJ's mystery box. He left it up to JJ to decide if there's more to Rey's parents or not. Some say the moment wouldn’t be right or has passed, why? Because it didn’t play out the way we wanted it to? I think that it’s another example of an inverted parallel. In ESB Luke finds out that Vader is his father, but in TLJ Rey doesn’t get her answer. Some say that Rey being a nobody makes her a “Mary Sue,” I completely disagree. The Force works in mysterious ways. Mark Hamill once said “Luke is not the sharpest tool in the box. Things are right in front of him, and he doesn't get it. Like when I'm looking for Ben Kenobi and I don't recognize Alec Guinness for who he is. I shoo Yoda away, 'Get out of my rations, I'm looking for a great Jedi warrior!' Those touches are so human.” Luke has never experienced the Force before, he’s stubborn and doesn’t see what’s right in front of him. He was sheltered by his aunt and uncle, and he wasn’t a fighter, he was a pilot. Rey says that she’s always felt it in her, and she is open to the Force. She was not sheltered, Rey had to fend for herself; she’s already a fighter. I think training with Luke would have been nice, and we know that they cut the 3rd lesson which might have given us that. But I think it has more to do with a state of mind, a willingness to be open to letting the Force guide her, for Luke that was more difficult. So while there are still some issues with Rey, RJ did not destroy or disregard JJ’s mystery box in this case. All he did was focus on her narrative, her character arc, what she needed to address to allow her character to progress. The truth is Maz might have answered this in TFA:Maz Kanata: Dear child. I see your eyes. You already know the truth. Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku... they're never coming back... But... there's someone who still could.Rey: Luke.Maz Kanata: The belonging you seek is not behind you... it is ahead. I am no Jedi, but I know the Force. It moves through and surrounds every living thing. Close your eyes... Feel it... The light... it's always been there. It will guide you. The saber. Take it.Maz might have been saying the belonging she sought was not be fulfilled by her parents but with the Resistance. She warned Rey that the Light Side of the Force would be there to guide her, not the Dark Side of the Force represented in the Ahch-To dark pit. She had to learn to stop waiting for her parents to come back into her life, that chapter is closed and the only thing that matters is progressing forward. She had to learn to rely on the Force and overcome her curiosity and self-doubt. She has to learn to find her belonging in her new friendships that stand with her against the FO.Rey’s mystery box question in TFA sets up big expectations, TLJ uses it to instead redirect us to an internal conflict that she has to overcome which is more important to her character development and arc than answering the mystery box question itself, interesting as it might be. If Rey knew the answer to the question and she found out she was a Skywalker or Kenobi it would have changed the dynamic between her and Kylo that is created by her not knowing the answer. That is why I believe RJ used JJ’s mystery box to get deeper into Rey’s character rather than actually answer the question. It didn’t throw it away, just gave you a possible Dark Side deception and kept the possibility to answer it differently intact. It gave ‘an answer’ but not necessarily ‘the answer,’ it’s still there if JJ thinks the answer to his own mystery box is something he wants to answer. But then again, we all know how JJ likes to keep his mystery boxes up on a shelf, unopened because the answer isn’t as great as the mystery itself. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2nldo3q

I really hope Filoni’s next show is set between VIII and IX.

There needs to be a major time skip between TLJ and IX. The fact that the first two sequels took place over mere weeks if not days bugs the HELL out of me. A good way to address the time disparity would be with a solid Filoni show. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2npMPdE

There are still plenty of people who haven't seen it yet, so please be wary of our spoiler policy. Thanks and May the Force be with you. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2F54wXO

I finally figured out what bothers me about how Snoke was handled.

In Star Wars, as in many great stories, there are many mysteries that are often left unsolved or unexplained. However, after THE LAST JEDI, (which I loved btw), I found myself somewhat frustrated with the lack of explanation as to where Snoke came from, why he had contact with Ben as a child, and how he arose to command the First Order. I know the official explanation, ("it's not important to the story"), however, I still felt somewhat cheated. A month later, I finally realized why. It's because the other mysteries of the movies are also often unknown to the characters. In regards to this, Leia, Luke, Han -- they all seem to have an idea of who Snoke is, or at least how he came about to know Ben and turn him to the dark side. I feel like the I, as an audience member, grew frustrated that I didn't (and now most likely won't), get the knowledge that it seems like most major characters have. It's like being in a room full of people and you're the only one not being told a big secret. Did anyone else feel this way? via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2GpMgJv

I love that John Williams was able to make Star Wars feel alien without electronic methods

Obviously ANH was made before electronic music was a thing big thing, but the soundtrack to this day feels alien, and alive. You can feel the science fiction with it, the worlds and sound seep through and it just melds perfectly. Tattooine sounds alien, the trade federation sounds alien and menacing, it’s just that despite the human instruments, it sounds like it’s from a Galaxy Far Far Away. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2Gpo8qf

Does anybody else kinda use Star Wars as an escape?

Like if I’ve had a bad day I like to come home and watch YouTube videos of Star Wars lore, or I watch a movie or The Clone Wars. Sometimes, even though my writing sucks, I like to write short stories based in the Star Wars universe. Does anybody else do this or am I crazy lol? via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2DIwtrr

One parallel I loved with TFA and TLJ

Han: take off that mask, you don't need it.Snoke: take off that ridiculous thing. One wanted a son and one wanted a slave. For this Ben deciding to take Snoke's throne was all the more heartbreaking. I don't know what this characters end will be but he is quickly becoming my favorite in the saga. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2nmiNqV

Why did Lucas change Anakin's Force Ghost in ROTJ?

When Vader died, he died as a 40-odd year old man. Sebastian Shaw looked convincing to me. Why did Lucas decide to replace him with Hayden and have Anakin just revert 20 years of ageing? It doesn't help that Sebastian just simply worked for the scene better. He had joy in his face to see his children and looked happy to be one with The Force. And now we got...Hayden's creepy stare? via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2rMwTHz

Anakin Skywalker should have been granted the rank of master

Anakin Skywalker has genuine reasons for annoyance at not being given the rank of master, other than simply being placed on the council without the rank. The only reason he is not is due to a technicality.Jedi knights were given the rank of master after they had successfully led their padawan to being knighted. It is true that Anakin did not do this; Ahsoka left the Order a padawan. However, after Ahsoka's innocence was proven Windu claimed that this had been her trail and the council would knight her. She left the Order anyway, yet the point stands that the council were ready to knight Ahsoka and thus Anakin would've been made a master. Therefore it is only due to a technicality that Anakin was not made a master, and I believe he should've been made one regardless at this point. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2nmrS2T

(Sad Moment) Vader's Death in Lego Star Wars

Honestly, despite the light-hearted and silly tone of the game, I've always found this moment to be very emotional and sad.Luke takes off the mask. Vader, obviously in pain, places a hand on his son's shoulder, as if trying to comfort and thank his son. He then dies and Luke, after shaking his head in sadness, kisses his hand and places it on Vader's head.Yes, I know this is followed by the comedic moment of Vader's body sliding down the shuttle ramp, but it still hits me square in the heart! It's moments like this that make really me appreciate how Traveler's Tales choose not to include dialogue in their older games. While I assume it was mainly for technical reasons, their games taught me to appreciate silent filmmaking. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2EgXgYH

Fyi. BB-8 and Ello Asty are actually Beastie Boys references

Beastie Boys had 8 albums. Hello Nasty = Ello Asty.JJ is a huge Beastie Boys fan. Also, the helmet he wears says "Born to Ill" in Aurebesh.Just an FYI. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2DGyUdU
