Today marks the 1 year anniversary of Star Wars Squadrons. A first person "flight sim" that puts players in the cockpit of the iconic ships. It's a cross platform, VR, moba style game. The game was labelled "the spiritual successor" to old xwing vs tie fighter games. The game people had been dreaming of for more than a decade was finally becoming reality, and virtual reality. The game was a surprise to gamers, and the success that came must have been a suprise to disney and ea. The game was promoted as being "done out of the box" with no micro-transactions. This was mind-blowing for an ea game. It was in response to the Battlefront microtransaction debacle. Motive and EA may have been trying to gain good will from gamers. However, the issues at launch for squadrons created a new debacle. The sales were noted as being 1.1 million digital copies sold at launch however there were many issues that held the game back, and kept players from sticking around. Although the experience was amazing to all that tried it, there were issues with rank, vr and hotas support - things they promised would all be cornerstones of the game. A game that was supposed to be ready out of the box now needed the team to get back to work on.In a matter of weeks Motive was able to fix those problems completely. They even went above and beyond with a few months of launch adding more maps, ships, and even a custom match mode. Balance and tuning patches were done until May 6, 2021, the last balance patch. After that, the game had been left to the players.Luckily for the community, the custom matches gave us the ability to create grassroots esports leagues that have grown and kept the game alive. The Calrissian Cup is a series of tournaments over the last year culminating in the final today, rewarding the top team 5,000 canadian dollars presented by The Gaming StadiumEven though the support for the game was all but abandoned from the creators, the players have never abandoned their support for the game, and through passion for star wars the community has kept it going.May the force be with you. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/3uyIbMm
