Kanan Jarrus lightsaber form

Since Kanan is one of my favourite characters, I decided to do an analysis of his lightsaber technique and what form or forms he used in combat.Form III: Soresu:As the Grand Inquisitor pointed out, Soresu is Kanan’s main style, taught to him by his master Deepa Bilaba. Form III focuses on defence against both blaster bolts and lightsabers, maximising the users chance of survival.Kanan adheres very heavily to the principles of this form, especially early on in the series. He is shown being very defensive in most of his duels, rarely being the aggressive opponent. He keeps his blade work tight and efficient rather than relying on acrobatics or elaborate flourishes.Kanan’s defensive skills have shown to be one of his most useful skills in a fight, as shown during his fight with Maul, where he parried and redirected each of the Sith Lords strikes until Maul made a mistake Kanan was able to take advantage of.He is also highly skilled at deflecting blaster bolts, which is a core focus of form III.Form I: Shii-Cho:Like all Jedi initiates, Kanan was initially trained in the first form of lightsaber combat.Kanan does make some use of the principals of this style in combat, keeping his moves simple and focusing in basic techniques, though it is definitely not his main style. On the rare occasion Kanan goes on the offensive, he seems to make use of this form, relying on simple cuts and strikes rather than more complicated assaults of other forms. He is also shown training both Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren in this form, teaching them the basic velocities of Form I.Form II: Makashi:After his blinding, Kanan later seems to implement Makashi into his fighting style. It can be assumed that he learnt it by mimicking the technique of the Grand Inquisitor after their numerous duels. His use of this style is shown mostly during his training of Sabine. He takes a higher stance and holds his lightsaber in one hand, with the other held behind his back, a classical Makashi stance. He also does a Makashi salute with his blade as a sign of respect before several of his duels. While training Sabine, Kanan made use of quick, yet efficient and minimalistic footwork to evade Sabine’s strikes, and quick redirection based parries rather than meeting her attacks head on. He also makes use of more precise and controlled thrusts and cuts when going in the offensive.Form V: Shien/Djem So:While Kanan for the most part did not show any skill with either variant of this form (Shien or Djem So), nor did he adhere to its philosophy in any way, there was one moment where he did make use of an individual technique from this form.During his duel with Maul, right after losing his sight, Kanan held his blade in a reverse grip, an unorthodox technique used by some users of Shien. It can be assumed that he was taught this guard by Ashoka Tano, as it was her preferred way to wield a lightsaber.Jar-Kai:During his final duel with the Grand Inquisitor, Kanan made use of dual wielding, using both his own saber and Ezra’s to overwhelm the Inquisitors defences. He was shown using this technique a second time during his duel with a vision of the Grand Inquisitor inside a Jedi Temple. Conclusion:In conclusion, I would say that Kanan’s primary form is Soresu, and that he supplements his style with Shii-Cho and later on Makashi to make up for the offensive shortcomings of form III.While he did not often incorporate these techniques into his style, he has shown the ability to make use of the unorthodox inverted grip of Shien, and the dual-wielding discipline of Jar-Kai in active combat. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/3sexRr6
