The Star Wars universe is so big mostly because of the fact that it consists not only of the movies, but cartoons, comics, books and games alike. Often those media give us information that make watching movies a little better experience. For example: The Clone Wars cartoon makes the conflict much deeper, Anakin is suddenly a likable character, his friendship with Obi-Wan is given more time. Other than that, my favorite case of side media supplementing the movies would be Vader lashing out on the Emperor, mere seconds after the infamous "NO!" in the Darth Vader comic series.
