Anakin desired and promised Shmi he would have the power to save a loved one from death and he promised it to Padme. Palpatine promised it to him to save Padme and it's one of the main reasons he turned.He finally had that power because he stopped Luke from dying at the hands of Palpatine. However, the power he needed and had was never a force power. 'Death is a natural part of life' as Yoda said. The power he needed and got was him fulfilling his destiny.
