Tarkin had no choice but to stay on the Death Star

I was watching New Hope to ring in the new year with a (death star) bang, and it occurred to me that Tarkin had no choice but to stay on the Death Star instead of evacuating. Consider this. . . .If he had evacuated, and nothing happened (either the analysis was wrong or Vader stopped all the ships), he would have looked weak in a moment of crisis. He might have survived the encounter, but any political power and military respect would have been gone. He might as well have been dead at that point.If he left and the Death Star was blown up, he would have had to report back to Palpatine.
