I don’t disagree with calling Rey a Mary Sue, and I don’t think it’s sexist to do so. The arguments against Rey aren’t sexist at all, but the way some people apply those arguments are.A good example is Rey’s piloting skill: she’s better than she should be in people’s eyes. This is a good evidence for the Mary Sue argument, but the people making this argument must be also willing to accept it for other characters as well:Anakin, the slave, blows up a blockade single handily before puberty; isn’t the “chosen one” just an in canon way to say Mary Sue?Luke, the farmer, blows up the death star the first time he flies a fighter craft; The problem is people selectively apply these standards, and when the only character these people choose to apply the standards to is a woman, well the story writes itself then, no?I’m not saying the people under this logic are consciously sexist, but implicit bias is a real and powerful force that some of y’all may not be aware of. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/35Sf1x6
