Particularly in regards to the light side vs dark side eternal conflict and even the force in general.I'm currently replaying the Kotor video game series, which is easily my favorite part of all star wars media (that I know of) and I realized that a big part of it is because of its relative moral ambiguity compared to the rest of Star wars, which often seems to come down to "Light side good, dark side bad"In the original Kotor, (seirously don't read the spoilers if you have any interest in playing the game it has a great twist that will be ruined of you read. And yes I still think its spoiler worthy 15 years later) your character is brainwashed by the jedi in order to be used as a tool against the sith forces. Those same forces were once Republic soldiers who followed your character (Darth revan) into war against the mandolorians who were buring worlds, while the jedi sat by and did nothing. In fact your character apparently went to war with the Republic to save the galaxy from an even greater threat as well. And that's the less morally ambiguous game of the two games. Now I get it, Kotor isnt canon anymore. But while its the best example, it isn't the only one. Rogue one comes very close to being nearly perfect in my opinion as it features, for lack of a better term, the dark side side of the rebellion. Cassian shooting an informant likely to squeal, a rebellion leader giving him a mission to kill a suspected traitor, rebels (albeit not affiliated with the rebellion itself) willing to use torture that will leave a prisoner catatonic, etc.I personally feel the absolute lack of moral ambiguity in the originals is their greatest weakness, and in contrast the relative abundance of it in the prequels is one of their biggest strengths. One of the most common complaints thrown at the jedi from everything I've seen is that they don't know what life is like for common people. But it seems like that gets swept away everytime it pops up by Ethier a dark side attack or with the jedi seemingly "proving" that they do understand, they just deal with bigger problems then common people understand. It just seems... stagnant to me. Why can't the light side have flaws? Why can't the dark side ever have a legitimate point? Why can't there be some who support the order and stability the empire brings without actively cheering their mass genocide? Why can't there be any rebels who commit war crimes who are just to important to the war effort to disavow? Now to be clear, I am not asking that from an in universe perspective. Rather as a storytelling device. Why must every good guy overcome their flaws eventually and every bad guy succumb to them?I don't know, maybe I'm just not seeing the right media. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/2Rgdveo
