Why You Didn't Like TLJ

A follow up to the survey posted Monday, here's the thread for that if you are interested. And here's the full spreadsheet of results for you to play with yourselves.I received 851 responses over the past two days, which is a considerable sample to work with!Survey Results1) How Old Are You?Significant range here, from 12 to 57. The average age of all respondents was 25.77 (let's call it 26).2) Put simply, did you like or dislike TLJ?ResponseCountPercentageNo, I didn't like it25830.3%Yes, I liked it59369.7%It was suggested that like/dislike was insufficient to capture the full range of feeling towards TLJ, particularly as I had people rate the PT and OT on a full numerical scale. I can't go back and change that now, but I did want to simplify the range of responses and point of comparison. So, we see that when forced to yes/no, about 70% of the sub did (however grudgingly) say they like TLJ. This could be a bunch of 6/10s; I won't actually know until/if I do a follow up asking people to rank each film (I might!)3) What was the first Star Wars movie you saw via any medium?ResultCountPercentageA New Hope60370.8%The Phantom Menace10912.8%Absolute shocker, it's primary A New Hope. TPM is an unsurprising second place to me; considering the average age, the average respondent was a kid when it came out.4) What was the first Star Wars movie you saw in theaters?ResultCountPercentageThe Phantom Menace27732.5%The Force Awakens20724.3%A New Hope12714.9%Revenge of the Sith10211.9%Attack of the Clones677.9%More diversity here. TPM actually won, with TFA in second place. As each was the first movie in a new Star Wars trilogy--and again, given the average (young) age - it's not a shock. It was pointed out that OT re-releases in cinemas probably skewed this, so a lot of the 3rd place ANH responses aren't necessarily from older people.5) What's your overall score of the Original Trilogy (1-10)?The average score was 8.86. The range was relatively small, with almost everyone giving it 7-10 and the lowest being a lone 4. Shocker, we love Star Wars.6) What's your overall score of the Prequel Trilogy (1-10)?More variance here. The average ended up being a 6.1 with responses ranging from 1 to 10.7) Did you read at least one EU (Legends) book that continued the story of the OT?ResultCountPercentageYes52461.6%No32738.4%Frankly, I messed this one up. I wanted to find a connection between people who liked the EU's treatment of the OG OT trio and their feelings about the new movies. Just asking if someone had read one of those books didn't cut it. So this data point isn't very useful, aside from being somewhat interesting that almost 2/3rds of us have at least some exposure to the old EU.AnalysisSo what's the difference between the majority "like" and minority "dislike?"EXTENDED UNIVERSEAs I've mentioned, I flubbed this, but for the sake of completion there wasn't a big difference. Of those who have read an EU book, 164 (30.8%) didn't like TLJ and 368 (69.2%) did. Of those who haven't read an EU book, 97 (29.2%) didn't like TLJ and 235 (70.7%) did.AGE... was not a significantly predictive data point. The "dislike" camp was 25.7 on average, and the "like" camp was 25.8 on average. Both not at all different from the overall average.FIRST MOVIEA similar story. ANH was the majority first experience for both groups; 68.6% for the "dislike" camp and 71.8% for the "like" camp. The major difference is in 2nd place TPM, which was 20% of the "dislike" group's first movie to 12.3% of the "like" group.FIRST MOVIE IN CINEMAThe top 3 for both groups were TPM, TFA, and ANH - and in that order. The percentages are all just 2-3% off, aside from ANH; 5% more of the "like" group were more likely to have seen that first.OT/PT SCOREGroupOT ScorePT ScoreLiked TLJ8.85.9Disliked TLJ8.96.6Here we are, the only real significant difference. The "dislike" group has a noticeably more favorable view of the Prequel Trilogy than the "like" group - by 0.7 points. It's still a relatively small difference, granted, but more off than the couple of percentage points in age, first movie, etc./u/exfan_1234 told me he did a regression analysis that I'm hoping he can post some details about in time since I'm a very amateurish number cruncher myself.I did a quick regression analysis with liked TLJ as the response. I used the PT score, OT score, EU, Age, and First Movie Seen as predictors. The only significant predictor turned out to be the PT. The more people liked the PT, the less likely they were to like TLJ.So there you have it. I blame /r/prequelmemes entirely for the civil war tearing us apart. Instead of hating sand because it's rough, coarse, irritating, and gets everywhere, we should focus on saving what we love about sand.OK this got away from me, have at it. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/2JvOEi5
