I never understood how the huts became so powerful. What is it about them that people fear?

The Hutts are basically large worms, they move slow, they have no special abilities, and they probably need special starships and hovercrafts just to move around because of their size.What makes them so powerful? What's to stop someone from waging war against them and killing all of them because they can't really defend themselves?If you look at organizations like the Black Sun, the Pikes, or pirates it makes sense, they are agile and can fight. The only power the Hutts have is their money for bounty hunters but money can be taken away.
