Something i just realized about The Phantom Menace that makes A New Hope even more of a masterpiece

We all remember that moment in A New Hope when Alec Guineas gives that coy playful look toward Luke and decides to allow Vader to cut him down to become one with the force. It was emotionally effecting at the time and damn good storytelling, but I just recently rewatched The Phantom Menace and the ending made me rethink that moment. It's even better than I realized. When -Obi Wan is looking at a young, brash Luke, powerless to do anything in that moment, a spectator to his master's battle, HE SEES HIMSELF. looking on from beyond that red barrier as Qui Gon faced down Darth Maul. He knows the anxiety and helplessness that Luke is feeling, but more importantly, he remembers the pain he felt when Qui Gon fell. The outrage was both devastating and invigorating. It powered -Obi Wan towards his victory with Maul and emboldened -Obi Wan as a Jedi to train Anakin and fight the Sith. He knows first hand the effect that a trauma like that can have on Luke and how it can do for his late blooming Palawan what no amount of training could. It could light a fire within him that never goes out to defeat Vader even when adversity strikes, to take up arms no matter the odds. This was -Obi Wans secret behind that look, remembering his master and the duel of fates, how it changed him forever and made him a stronger Jedi for it. So he gave Luke the same moment. He would need it for the fight ahead. Damn I love these movies! via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2hZVFvm
