Did people know Palpatine secret when the movies were first coming out?

I'm a bit late to Star Wars. I've been watching them in chronological order (Currently in the Clone Wars animated series). When did you figure out Sheev Palpatine a bad guy? Which movie? Which moment?I feel like it's obvious now but I want to know what it looked like back then. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/MqLjJG2
