Finn has the most complex and substantive arc in THE LAST JEDI

Far from being a mere repeat of his arc in The Force Awakens as some have criticized, the psychological journey Finn takes in The Last Jedi is not only the most subtle, it is also arguably the most important. As the film begins, Finn has one goal: protect Rey. His feelings towards the Resistance and of justice in general seem to be those of distant appreciation, more acknowledgement than anything. The Resistance is more of a vehicle to the safety of his personal friends (mainly Rey and Poe) than an actual cause of good in the galaxy.Additionally, Finn is shortsighted and aggressive, to his detriment. His passions run high in the heat of the moment, and he is quick to act and slow to consider. This is the opposite of Rose Tico, who is extremely opinionated but always fully aware of why she holds the beliefs that she holds, and these reasons are always very personal and immediate for her. Finn, on the other hand, just believes. He just picks a side because he likes that side better.Over the course of the film, both of these character flaws are challenged, in a storyline which wraps them up into one: Finn's detachment from the Resistance is a symptom of his shortsightedness. As Finn tries to save the fleet (doing so only to ensure that Rey doesn't return to a war zone), he is encountered with situations of intense cruelty and injustice (specifically, the situation on Canto Bight and the firing of the cannon on Crait). Acting on his moral instincts, he lashes out in anger against the perpetrators of these injustices, caring little for the actual well-being of the victims themselves. But along the way, he learns to value the goal of the resolution (liberating the fathiers and protecting one's friends), rather than the righteousness of the conflict itself (destroying the town and committing an act of self-righteous martyrdom). In doing so, he transforms from a rogue protagonist into a genuine hero: a transformation made all the more impressive given that his character flaws certainly originate from his upbringing as a stormtrooper, resulting in a universally complete journey from absolute evil into absolute good. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/2pUB00y
