Why Luke had to do it.

Luke force projecting himself to Crait was the smartest thing he could have possibly done in that situation.I'm honestly glad Luke didn't actually show up to fight Ren. Originally I was a little bothered that we didn't get to see Luke and Ren go head to head. I wanted, like I imagine many other fans did, to see a final duel for Luke, but looking back, projecting himself to Crait was the best thing he could have possibly done for himself and the resistance.Luke was faced with three options.Do nothing, and let the resistance die.Travel to Crait and die at the hands of the first order, or kill his own nephew.Force project to the planet.Luke realised, sitting by that burning tree with Yoda, that his Legacy, and his fame are not the curses he thinks they are NO they are what will give the resistance the hope that they need to win. By projecting his way to the battle of Crait, Luke shows the Galaxy 3 things -Luke Skywalker, hero of the Galaxy has returned. He withstands an ATAT barrage, literally brushing it off.He completely humiliates the first order and Ren, while saving the resistance fighters.Suddenly this ancient legend of the galaxy has become a messiah figure, who is going to inspire hope across the galaxy, as we see with the children in the final scene retelling the story of Luke's last stand. It is basically the Star Wars equivalent of Jesus showing up on a battlefield and picking a side.Yes it would have been amazing to see a fight between Ren and Luke, but that would have been a lose/lose situation for the resistance, either Luke died by Ren or the first order, destroying the moral and hope of the resistance, or Luke is forced to kill his own nephew. This way, Luke was able to take one last shot at the dark side and give the resistance and the whole galaxy someone to rally behind once again. The feats he was able to show as a force projection solidify this idea of Luke as something of a legend, something he couldn't have done were he actually there. The idea of Luke Skywalker is far more powerful than the man himself. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2p3owWE
