So, let's talk about Kylo Ren.

In the Battlefront subreddit, I mentioned to somebody that Kylo Ren scared the poodoo out of me. Somebody asked why, and I explained at length what my reasoning was. Another person recommended I share this to the Star Wars subreddit, so I figure hey, why not?So, let's talk about Kylo Ren real quick. He's the grandson of Anakin Skywalker. One of the most powerful force users like, ever. Of all time. So the first time we see this guy, he comes down in this imposing vessel with a great theme, and we see him sort of sluggishly totter around. Not entirely imposing- then he starts talking and there's just this... Sinister undertone, it's not forceful or booming but it isn't... Right. It's malevolent. Then he just straight up kills Lor San Tekka when he figures out this interrogation is useless.Poe does what any brave Resistance Soldier would do. He takes the shot, but then hOLY CRAP WHAT WAS THAT KYLO REN JUST DID. Dude froze a blaster bolt and Poe, and just... Kept the bolt there without even looking at it, until he left and let it do its thing. It was effortless. So that's pretty god damn terrifying. This is a dude who talks to his Grandfather's helmet for advice. This is a dude who, when he takes his helmet off, bathes it in the god damn ashes of his enemies. Like. Oh my god that is mental. If you didn't shiver a little bit when the dude pounded his helmet into people's ashes, I dunno what to tell you.But then we see his face, my god, his face. It's like looking at Anakin again. The hair, the blank but... Somewhat predatory expression? But it's just this dead ringer, this visage of Anakin, the way he looks at people, the way he talks, the way the guy moves. It's every single thing Anakin could and would have become had he not been utterly crippled upon his descent into The Dark Side.Kylo Ren is terrifying without his mask off, because you see in that moment, the worst possible outcome.People make fun of his temper tantrums too, but I think that's horribly unjustified. He throws them because he doesn't hold back, he's trying SO HARD to give himself to the Darkness, he's not fighting those emotions like he was taught to. No Dark Side user should- even Palpatine doesn't when it suits him, see: Toasting Luke when he doesn't get what he wants. Then later, he's completely just, insane. Off the wall. Without any regard for his health. This guy seriously TANKS A BOWCASTER BOLT and still puts up a good fight, but then he beats the hell out of his wound just to evoke more pain, more rage, this guy is SO COMMITTED to giving himself to the Dark Side that he just.He just doesn't know when to quit. And I didn't even cover his incredible ability to just, manipulate minds like it's nothing. Get info out of the most capable soldier of The Resistance? Knock somebody out in passing, literally? Bonkers, the dude is unrestrained power. If you don't fear Kylo Ren as a character, then something is amiss about one's understanding of the dark side, of the fact that he's a mirror of Anakin, of everything he's about- and now he's dealing with just how much he's trying to give himself to the dark side.Who knows what will happen? But there is one last thing to remember.Kylo Ren slaughtered the entire Jedi Temple under Luke's control. He was one of the students. The star pupil, perhaps. (definitely tbh)And. He. Defeated. Luke. Maybe didn't kill him, but Luke was present, and so shaken by this, that he's gone into hiding, and rightly so.Because Kylo Ren has been hunting Luke ever since then. His singular mission has been to destroy the Jedi, and he's come closer than anybody else ever has.So, there you have it. Why Kylo Ren scares the absolute hell out of me- and why I love him as a character. via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2jx08aU
