I’m in the middle of rewatching The Force Awakens for the first time since it came out, and honestly? It’s actually not bad

As usual for Star Wars, the special effects and acting are great, but I always thought the problem was the writing. Honestly? I would say it’s mostly good. In terms of the story, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it just feels like a mixed up version of A New Hope, but on the other hand, I liked the story of ANH. As for the characters, the returning ones feel faithful and the new ones are interesting, at least. Poe’s fun, not sure how to feel about Finn, I would die for BB-8, and I know Kylo/Ben is generally seen as a better character than Rey, but honestly? I think I like Rey. Kylo feels like an edgy 12-year-old in a grown man’s body and he might look and sound cool, but I think that’s the most praise I can give him. On the other hand, Rey often gets called a Mary Sue or Kathleen Kennedy’s self-insert character, but I disagree with both accusations, personally. For the latter, Kennedy didn’t even write this movie. How’s she supposed to insert herself? For the former, I don’t really think any of her abilities are out of place. I could imagine a lot of flight manuals ending up on Jakku, so she probably read those and, if nothing else, was able to piece together what does what on the Falcon’s interface. Additionally, she probably learned how to repair a ship by, again, reading manuals and repairing parts. A part that works is worth more than one that doesn’t, after all. The last two reasons I can think of for why she might be considered a Mary Sue is her skills with a blaster, which, I mean, isn’t rocket science-you point it at your target and pull the trigger, simple as-and how quickly she learned to use the Force. All she does with it in this movie, IIRC, is use it to grab the lightsaber, which I’m just gonna call the Skywalker Lightsaber, since all of its users, except for Finn, were Skywalkers. We literally seen babies lift small objects in The Clone Wars, I really don’t think her being able to is outlandish. TL;DR: Like the acting, like the effects, conflicted on the story, characters are a mixed bag. If I had to rank this movie, I would put it above The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and A New Hope, but not anything else. That’s not to say any of these movies are bad, some are just better than others. I won’t say where The Last Jedi or The Rise of Skywalker stack up, though, as I haven’t rewatched those yet. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/KSdq7aU

My GF and I are watching Chronologically. She just saw Anakin take care of some kids...

The scene finishes and my lovely GF (who has never seen SW before) WHIPS her head around in shock and asks' "Did he just kill those kids?" I start laughing and she just starts repeating "oh my god, oh my god, that's so F-d up!" When Obi-Wan high grounds tf out of Anakin she starts to cheer "yes suffer child killer!" It was beautiful. I love knowing her first Vader appearance will be RO! The hallway scene is about to go CRAZY! via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/fcSNaPC

Does anyone else feel like Uncle Owen was under used in the prequels

Does anyone else feel like the prequel kinda forgot about Uncle Owen then somewhat shoe horned him in later? While I don’t know how much he should have been involved I feel like the fact that in the prequels he and Anakin didn’t even know each other until they were adults kinda is a missed opportunity. The impact of uncle Owen having supposed ideology issues with Anakin doesn’t really make as much sense as canonically they only knew each other for about 2/3 years in which he likely never or rarely visited since there was a war and his mom was already deadI wish they had been able to do something to make their relationship atleast somewhat closer, considering he was the only relative we had met in the original series. Even if they didn’t make him a major part, I feel like they could have easily just made on of Anakins friends in the Phantom Menace named Lars instead of random names like Kister (who also was never mentioned again in the series) Maybe I’m the only one who really cares but I do wish that they actually used one of the few characters who were alive in both the prequels and original series via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/0asBg8C

Considering this line in a book, why does Boba Fett let Fennec call him "Boba?"

From ESB A Certain Point of View, "Wait for It""Boba," Bossk hissed in greeting. How many times was he supposed to tell the old Trandoshan that it was Fett or Boba Fett. He wasn't no little kid anymore. Sure they had history. Probably would be the closest thing he had to a friend, if he'd actually wanted a friend. ...Why does Boba not have the same problem with Fennec calling him Boba? via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/T3xvOoI

Me and my Mother recently watched The Clone War’s micro-series first half, I’ve gotta say…. It’s a pretty decent introduction to Star Wars: The Clone Wars as a show.

Basically me and my mother are doing a "tradition" as of now where we are watching through all of the Prequel Era content, then later we're gonna move into the Imperial/Original Trilogy Era. We Started with The Phantom Menace & Attack of the Clones but most recently we’ve watched The Clone War’s Micro-Series by Genndy Tartakovsky. I’ve gotta say it’s a pretty great introduction for characters like Grevious and Assaji Ventress. Me and her were utterly surprised by how ruthless Ventress was as an antagonist when she first showed up, and overtime my mother has grown to really appreciate her as an antagonist in The Clone Wars as a show. The same goes for Grevious honestly who she was already aware of, but didn’t actually know much about his backstory but was honestly really surprised by how effective he was in battle against several Jedi Masters & Knights… she jokingly called him an “Angel of Death” while we watched him kill all of the Jedi there aside from Ki-Adi-Mundi & Shaakti. Overall she also thinks this was a great introduction to the character. I cannot say I disagree. As for the show as a whole I really liked it, it’s got some very great action and I think does a good job of filling in what happened between Attack of The Clones and The Clone Wars as a whole, along with the Star Wars: Republic comics which we've watched videos on. Even if it’s part of the old Expanded Universe & not the current one aside from some of these battles and certain scenes being referenced in the current EU. As for what we think about Star Wars: The Clone Wars, so far I've enjoyed it but will be saving me and her opinions on that once we finish the first half of the show, specifically Seasons 1-3. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/oLitImA

Darth Vader shouldn’t have lost to Obi-wan again.

If this is 10 years removed from revenge of the Sith and obi wan hasn’t trained at all and cut himself off from the force meanwhile Vader has been active all these years then imo it should be no contest for Vader. Even in Rots Obi-Wan got lucky with that fight. The only reason was because Anakin grew arrogant but I don’t think Vader would make that same mistake again 10 years later. Obi-Wan also displayed crazy force powers in that fight with the boulders which to me doesn’t make sense cause I thought he wasn’t as in tune with the force as other Jedi were that’s why he relies alot on his defense. Vader even with his disabilities should outclass obi-wan In almost every category. Minus the plot which is another issue for me but Vader losing to Obi-Wan again just doesn’t make sense to me. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/FxC9mR6

My partner is not a fan of Luke. Like at all.

It's her first time in this galaxy far far away, and I'm walking her through all of the movies and media. At this point we've watched everything but the bad batch, the last half of TCW, and Ep IX. We were finishing up Kenobi, and my partner came back to this idea of "Luke sucks" because she loves Leia in every piece of media so far. Not just compared to other characters, mind you he's just, and I quote, "a whiny bitch". I've been with her for over a year. I'm not typically up in arms over such petty shit, but like.. that might've been the first time where she's fucked with me that I've been ready to throw down lol. She genuinely does not see why anyone likes him at all.How do I get her to see the light? Is she a lost cause? (95% joking on that last bit)Edit: to make it clear, her opinion is totally valid, however much I disagree. I'm not genuinely trying to make her change her view, but I've also never heard this take before and find it to be quite hot via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/QrmcxKe

You are showing someone all of Star Wars for the first time. What order are you doing?

This is a much more interesting question now adays then it used to be. Like 3 years ago there was just 3 shows. Now there is 9 with Ahsoka (minus resistance). So the order of what to show people now is a lot more complicated I think. I tried showing someone a few years ago Star Wars chronologically and I didn’t think it worked out so good so now I always start 4,5,6 which is what makes this list hard. So here is the list, what is the order you would show? The Assumption is that you want to get someone into the franchise they would then if interested continue with it to watch all the content.List in chronological order (I’ve not included the shows that are kid focused and not important to watch as an adult like Young Jedi Adventures and Resistance).Tales of the Jedi (Ep 1,2,3)Episode 1 The Phantom MenaceTales of the Jedi (Ep 4)Episode 2 Attack of the ClonesThe Clone Wars (until the last 4 episodes)Episode 3 Revenge of the SithThe Clone Wars Mandalore ArcTales of the Jedi (5,6)Bad BatchSoloKenobiRebelsAndorRogue OneEpisode 4 A New HopeEpisode 5 The Empire Strikes BackEpisode 6 Return of the JediMando S1 & S2Book of Boba FettMando S3AhsokaEpisode 7 The Force AwakensEpisode 8 The Last JediEpisode 9 Rise of Skywalker Putting it all out on the table really shows how much new content we have gotten. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/r4Y98XR

Chewbacca lived through all 3 trilogies. Can you name any other character to live that long? Droids don’t count and neither does Palpatine. He died in Return of the Jedi, but before he died Sidious cloned himself that’s who was in episode 9.

The face of someone who’s just witnessed one of the coolest escape scenes in SW. The way Luthen evaded the Arrestor Cruiser was brilliantly done. If you would have told me I’d enjoy a slow-burning SW series with minimal action this much I would have laughed. I hope we see more series like this.

A Christopher Nolan Star Wars movie

So recently while doing press for Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan did an interview (link below) and was asked during a rapid fire Q&A portion where he had to answer YES/NO/PASS about whether or not he would direct another superhero movie after the Dark Knight movies and he said “NO” and very quickly was asked if he would direct a STAR WARS movie and after a brief pause he said “PASS”, indicating there’s a small crack open in the door where he might stop through if he as offered a chance. Nolan has gone on record on how Star Wars inspired him to make movies in the first place and how it’s influenced his filmmaking process, particularly in Interstellar. Nolan even got to interview George Lucas and I could tell that Nolan, normally very controlled and stoic, was trying not to fanboy too much. Long story short, would you like to see Christopher Nolan make a Star Wars movie? https://youtu.be/ilIefxbSJT8 via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/VHeAxga

Rewatched TCW. Some thoughts on the show as a whole.

Ah, The Clone Wars. Overrated? Underrated? Hard to tell. People seem to either think it's the greatest thing in Star Wars, or a childish imitation of the multimedia project that came before it. Lately, I gave the show a rewatch as part of my mega marathon that started on May the 4th, and I also reread the tie-in comics and "Dark Disciple". So here are some thoughts that absolutely no one asked for:If you ask me, the truth about TCW does lie somewhere in the middle. I think the show takes a while to gain its footing, to the point that I found myself mentally dividing it into two parts: before and after the models change for the heroes in "Heroes on both sides". I also think it can be very inconsistent in terms of quality and tone. One minute we're watching two episodes of R2 and 3PO on a trippy, goofy adventure, the literal next we're going to space Vietnam in the Umbara arc. Talk about tonal whiplash. In the earlier seasons (2 and half), I'd say the episodes that I thought were great/good include "Jedi Crash", "Ambush", "The Deserter", the Domino Squad arc, the Ryloth arc, the Geonosis arc and Boba's Revenge arc. The rest ranged from pretty decent kids entertainment, to forgettable or less than good. The writers that caught my eye were: Katie Lucas (Asajj betrayed arc. Nightsister massacre arc. Maul Returns arc. The Fives arc).Matt Michnovetz (The Citadel arc, Umbara arc and the Bad Batch arc)Christian Taylor (Mortis arc. Yoda's walkthrough arc),Chris Collins, (Onderon arc. Maul and Mandalore arc) I'd also give a very honorable mention for Daniel Arkin ("Heroes on Both Sides", "Pursuit of Peace")Charles Murray (Ahsoka's trial)Henry Gilroy (Slaves of the Republic. Although the comic handled Anakin and the subject of slavery a lot better)Dave Filoni (Siege of Mandalore) And I'd say that those were the arcs I loved. Most of the rest was decent/good, although some of it I didn't care for. We didn't need an episode about R2 and 3PO buying fruit to set up Cad Bane's attack on the senate, somehow, for some reason, D-Squad might be George Lucas' favorite arc, and the less said about Mace and Jar Jar's adventure, the better. The show sometimes rivals the best of the EU and sometimes feels like the children's entertainment it is. Now, some more thoughts: Anakin's portrayal:I've spoken before about that. I think the show jumped straight to the Anakin of early RotS. He's the cunning warrior, the accomplished general, and the bantering, yet loyal, friend. Albeit the show makes him more extroverted and charming. There are moments where angsty movie Anakin comes out, but they're kinda far and in-between. Personally, I wonder if the show could've realistically evolved Anakin from insecure Padawan to knight/accomplished general before introducing Ahsoka around the middle. Part of why I love comics like "Star Wars" by Jason Aaron and Kieron Gillen is the effort the writers put into evolving the characters from one version to another. Luke goes from naive and green Jedi wannabe, to a more mature and seasoned, yet flawed, Padawan/leader. Han gradually becomes more loyal and involved when it comes to the rebellion, and proves his worth as a natural leader. Leia's relationships with Han and Luke are also fleshed out. Thankfully, TCW starts six months after AotC, I believe. In that period I squeeze the first attack on Kamino, the battle of Jabiim and Anakin's walkthrough with A'sharad Hett (all from the "Republic" comics). Not to mention "Brotherhood* by Mike Chen and "Age of the Republic - Anakin Skywalker" by Jody Houser. Together, they form that missing link. Ahsoka Tano: Oh, Ahsoka. At some point, probably my second favorite star wars leading lady. Now I'm not sure. Her existence is a little contrived given the lack of mention in RotS, but I can accept it. Especially since it came from George. Ahsoka goes from a reckless, snarky action girl, to a wiser and stronger individual with the courage to walk away from everything she knows. Personally, I find her to be a less interesting version of Luke in some ways, at least in TCW. And I can't help but find Anakin/Obi-Wan and Kanan/Ezra to be much more interesting master/padawan dynamics compared to Anakin's fairly simple relationship with Ahsoka. Nevertheless, she is a very enjoyable character who clearly resonated with a lot of people, and I still do love her. Asajj Ventress: Probably my favorite character arc in the show. Asajj's story is that of someone twisted by trauma, and redeemed by loss as she has to reevaluate her life and find a new path. Darth Maul: Okay his return was kinda stupid, but damn was he awesome. Every episode with him is a banger, and Sam Witwer owns every scene with his passion. The Clone Wars turns Maul into a sith arguably more tragic than Vader. Unlike Anakin, Maul never chose the dark side, he was born into it. And whatever twisted resemblance of love he found, was always taken from him. The Chips: Love the Fives arc, but boy am I mixed on the chips. On one hand, I see them as an expansion on the "genetically modified to be obedient" angle and a good explanation for order 66's high success. On the other hand, they were unnecessary, and took away the clones' agency in their most important role/scene. The EU offered more variety in their reaction and was more interesting, but ultimately, I find merit in both versions of order 66. Barriss: I haven't read the medstar duology. But as much as I overall quite like the "Ahsoka's trial" arc, Barriss was not handled well in it. She's mostly relegated to a plot device to drive Ahsoka's story/arc. We never see the journey of Barriss from selfless Padawan to disillusioned terrorist. It happens off-screen and we don't see what shaped it. The worst part is probably the "Barriss was right" crowd. The Mandalorians:Honestly, not much thoughts on them. The push/pull between tradition and the need for peace is interesting, but The Clone Wars never fleshes them out significantly. And You're basically stuck between death watch and the new Mandalorians. Factions like Jaster Mereel's were missing. I remember Mandies being better and more fleshed out in Rebels, partially because a main character was a mandie. Funnily enough, I remember the mandies in Rebels being more like Mereel's faction. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/Ig7WxwY
