I would have preferred it if Rey Palpatine was the beginning of the trilogy, instead of a last minute addition.

It would create a lot more empathy, particularly regarding Luke and his mistake with Kylo. The catalyst of that error would be explicit and the tension TFA ends with when Rey Palpatine and Luke come face to face would be a great cliffhanger ending.
