Kylo Ren appreciation thread - a post dedicated to clearing up some misconceptions about the character, and why I believe he is one of the best characters in the entire saga.

I see Kylo Ren getting a lot of hate on /r/starwars, /r/movies and pretty much anywhere Star Wars is discussed. It completely baffles me to see people's hatred of the character, as I believe he is not only ONE OF the best character in the ST, but in the entire saga as a whole. So I just wanted to make a thread to discuss some people's complaints."He's so whiny! He's such a baby! He's supposed to be a badass!"Nope, he is not supposed to be a badass. Believing that he is, is missing the point of the character entirely. Imagine finding out that your grandfather was one of the top henchman in a regime that was responsible for BILLIONS of deaths around the galaxy. Imagine finding out that your own mother and father fought in a Rebellion against him. Imagine also finding out that he was the most powerful force user to exist. What kind of effect would that have on a young mans psyche? Anger at his parents for hiding it from him? What if other Jedi were out performing him at the Academy? Disappointment in himself because he feels he needs to live up to his Grandfathers abilities in the Force? Kylo Ren is not supposed to be a badass. He is an angry, scared and confused young man who is trying to find his place in the galaxy but he's doing a pretty terrible job at it."He got beat by Rey! He's pathetic!"Yes, he got beat by Rey. However, remember when we saw Rey use her staff to pummel two crooks who tried to take BB-8? She's clearly very capable. Remeber when Kylo Ren got shot in the chest by Chewie's bowcaster? The same bowcaster that we see multiple times absolutely demolishing Stormtroopers? A bowcaster so powerful, Han Solo even comments on it twice. And he got stabbed in the shouldber by Finn (who we also see is a capable fighter during his duel with TR-8R). It's really no surprise he was defeated. Finally, I think he is one of the most interesting characters in the saga. I think the first time we meet him, we are supposed to think that he is a badass supervillain. But as the film unfolds, we learn more about his character and we see that he is a 'fake'. He isn't as evil as he makes out to be; he feels the call to the light - he wants to be good but he feels like he needs to be evil if he wants to be as powerful as he thinks he should be (being the grandson of Darth Vader). This fills him with torment and despair, ultimately culminating in him murdering his father. But it doesn't bring him the power he craves - he's defeated by an untrained desert scavenger. What will this to do his self-esteem? How will he come back from this?Personally, I find this infinitely more interesting than your generic, over powered super villain. The Emperor was a cool villain, but all he was motivated by was the desire to be evil. Darth Vader was a much more interesting villain as he had conflict within him - he had baggage, a dead wife, children he didn't know about. There was still good in him deep down. It helps that Adam Driver gives an amazing performance. He's able to mix deep sadness and vulnerability with some truly menacing dialogue. I get shivers when he says "Where... IS IT?!"Well, that's pretty much all I have to say. I think he's a fantastic character and other that Luke Skywalker, he's the one I'm most looking forward to seein more of in VIII and IX. If anyone else has any thoughts on Kylo Ren I'd love to hear them. Maybe you agree and you think he's amazing! Maybe you disagree and you still think he sucks. Let me hear it! via /r/StarWars http://ift.tt/2iG9dkr
