According to the TPM novel the 3 in C-3PO's comes from him being third in the skywalker family. Here's the paragraph"He'd given it a number the night before, choosing three because the droid made the third member of his little family after his mother and himself."I thought that was a pretty cool retcon to give some meaning to threepio's name.
