Why didn't Jabba immediately have R2s memory wiped when he first showed up?

The droid "foreman" who assigned jobs to 3PO and R2 said "you're a fiesty little one, but you'll soon learn some respect". Even Owen Lars was about to have their memories wiped. Why would he need to learn respect when memory wipes are a thing? Sorry if this has been discussed already, it's just something that never made sense to me. via /r/StarWars https://ift.tt/y4tAz3q
